The 7-day chart fills in as hourly readings build up, and shows once a coin has a full day of them. Readings started on 25 Oct.
What open interest is
Open interest is the total value of futures contracts that are still open. Every contract has a long on one side and a short on the other, and it is counted once. It rises when traders open new positions and falls when positions close, whether they close by choice, at a stop or by liquidation.
Reading open interest with price
| Price | Open interest | Usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Up | Up | New positions are pushing the move |
| Up | Down | Shorts are closing, sometimes in a squeeze |
| Down | Up | New positions are pushing it lower |
| Down | Down | Longs are closing, including liquidations |
High and rising open interest, with funding high and the crowd leaning one way, means a lot of leverage is stacked on one side. If price moves against it, forced closes can turn a small move into a sharp one. It shows where the risk sits, not when it gives way.
How we count it
Each exchange's own open interest for the coin's perpetual contract, converted to US dollars at the mark price and refreshed every 5 minutes. Quarterly futures and options are not included. A few exchanges report open interest far out of line with their trading volume, so we leave those out of the table and the totals. That is one reason totals differ from site to site.
Common questions
Is open interest the same as volume?
No. Volume counts every trade over a period, including positions opened and closed within minutes. Open interest is a snapshot of what is still open right now.
Does rising open interest mean the price will go up?
No. Every new long has a new short on the other side. Rising open interest means more money and more leverage in the market, in both directions. Price and positioning tell you which side is under pressure.
Why is the 24-hour change sometimes missing?
It compares the total now with the total a day ago from our own hourly history. When a coin is new to the page, the change appears once a full day of readings has built up.
